Amazon.com Review

Ayya Khema is like that pesky little angel on our shoulder, except instead of saying, "Don't do this" or "Don't do that," she reminds us to pay attention and keep growing. One of the best Western exponents of the Buddhist path, Khema organizes her lectures in Be an Island around the Buddha's exhortation to be an island unto yourself. By taking refuge in Buddhist teachings and the Buddhist community, you can escape the petty concerns of the self and become an anchor for others. In disarmingly practical language, Ayya Khema teaches us that true practice is getting the tiny details of life right, the middling moments--thinking before we speak, recognizing greed and generosity in ourselves and others, making the mind pliable at all times. Like a weekly lecture series, this is the type of book you'll want to go back to, placing it near an altar or spiritual nook for easy access. --Brian Bruya

Ayya Khema does something remarkable in this book: she breaks down the simple fundamentals of Buddhist practice in the Theravada tradition without watering it down. Most chapters are 2-5 pages, easily digestible for people that may be just learning about practice, or have busy schedules.Despite the brevity, this book shines like a rare gem among all Buddhist books presented today because it was written with absolutely fluff. These are simple teachings that might take you a long time to actually KNOW to your core. This is such a beautiful book that anyone from beginner to the wise can appreciate.Thank you Ayya!

Ayya Khema is the best writer on Buddhism I know. She has a unique ability to explain the sometimes esoteric meanings in Buddhist teachings in a way you can understand. Her books, including this one, are some of the few I find myself going back to again and again.

Ayya Khema writes with great clarity on the Buddha's teachings and Vipassana meditation. Her writings have been an inspiration to me.

Well worth the read

Unfortunately Theravada Nuns are frequently considered inferior to Monks. Any Ayya Khema book will dispel that prejudice. She was a strong woman who "Walked the Walk". Her works are in the same league as Bhikkhu Bodhi, Walpola Rahula, & Bhante Gunaratana, 3 Monks who I ,greatly, admire. I recommend her books.

The author's theme of becoming independent in one's practice and looking inward for spiritual guidance, i.e. taking refuge inwardly, rather than searching elsewhere. She has some good practical examples and suggestions.

Ayya Khema's guidance to Buddhist practice is simple, practical and very helpful to anyone serious about his meditation practice .

This book is beautifully written and is a pleasure to read. The author will take you down the gentle path of mindfulness in the present moment and teach you to overcome the mental formation you think of as yourself. This review can not do justice to this wonderful Buddhist book, buy it if your desire is to travel on the path to enlightenment. Ayya Khema was there and will help you along the way.
