If I were a writer and knew that I would have to give up money if I didn't have a "book" on my publisher's desk by a date certain, and time was up, this is the kind of load of crap I would dish up. What passes for a plot is meaningless: the whole book is fleshed out with WW II history that needn't be narrated as fiction, and arcane minutiae of criminal and civil procedure that couldn't be more boring and, moreover, is woefully inaccurate. I actually felt that I'd been tricked into reading this steamer by being bamboozled by Grisham's reputation, on which I can't comment. BORING!!!!!!

I have always enjoyed John Grisham's novels. This one is a disappointment. First of all I did NOT like the ending at all. I know that's about me and not about the book but I still didn't like it. More than that I didn't like wasting my time thumbing through page after page after page of completely useless narrative. There is a vastly long section at the center of the book where he is writing about the mothers mental problems and the sons law school career that are a complete waste of time. It's obvious that the publishers are paying him by the page or by the word. The result is a huge amount of unnecessary text that doesn't really contribute to the story, that is very useful in putting me to sleep. This is not the first time this is happened. I have found it happening more and more frequently with other authors.

This is a disjointed, dislikable book - a soap opera with some courtroom window dressing and the Bataan Death March thrown in for no apparent reason except alleged depth of feeling. The mystery of the main character is that he won't talk - a sort of misguided Clint Eastwood Man With No Name anti-hero. Not talking can work on the screen but does tend to drag on on the page. The wife does a bad thing while her husband is slogging around in the Philippines, although it isn't clear what that is until the end. Consequences ensue. The hero kills somebody else. The generations-old family farm is lost to a shyster lawyer. Almost everybody dies. Who knew what? When did they know it? Who was wrong? In the end, who cares? I can't believe I read the whole thing.

If you wish to spend at least 1/3 of the book getting a histoty lesson on Gen McAuthor and Japan's takeover of the Philippenes then you may enjoy the book. I skipped over the large majority of this section. The book also drug on and on in other parts. I wanted to enjoy a thriller like the authors earlier books, not a sad, tedious and boring book like this one. this will be my last book by this author.

I was really eager to read this book, and hated it. Long long descriptive passages about mundane things. So much dramatic build up about nothing. The war parts are appreciated but the rest was a waste of time witn unsympathetic characters. Time to find a new fave author.

This was a bad read. Too much information on mostly known history. Agree, not enough character development on some people. Way too much detail before "secret" was FINALLY revealed in last 10 pages!!

A lot of long arduous filler to finally reveal nothing of surprise. Dont believe the hype. This is not his best work. I feel more like the victim of a con job than a satisfied fan.

I read all of Mr. Grisham's novels and look forward to each release with anticipation. But none before have held my interest as much as The Reckoning. My uncle through marriage is a survivor of the Bataan Death March. He never spoke of his experiences. Not a history buff, I had no understanding of the atrocaties of this war. This novel was spellbinding from start to finish.

This will be my 3rd book. I had cancer and this book helped me through it. I loaned it and then had a 2nd different cancer with different tastes then. Got the 2nd book and later loaned it out and now that I want to loan it to a friend I can’t find it. So I am now getting my 3rd copy.

This is clueless when it comes to Cancer nutrition.... recipes are sugar laden, (both containing sugar and foods that become sugar during metabolism....both FEED cancer! As well all kinds of artificial ingredients are used including artificial butter flavor??? Canola oil which is heavily genetically modified AND highly inflammatory is used throughout. Recipes lack vital antioxidants, nutrient that support detoxification pathways, ingredients that are nutrient dense providing essential vitamins and minerals and everything is either low fat or fat free.... again loaded with sugar. Anyone who is buying this for Cancer fighting recipes avoid... this is a 1990's low fat diet nightmare book... and we know now that is NOT good for anyone! It also includes diabetes references but recipes still use added sugar. This type of cookbook should be written by someone who has education... ideally in biochemistry. Very disappointing---immediate return!

In the Fall of 2009, two of my immediate family members were diagnosed with different forms of cancer within three months of each other. One has lung cancer. One has stomach cancer (which had been mis-diagnosed as IBS by two independent physicians over the course of a year). As both began chemo treatments and suffered the seemingly inevitable problems that go along with it, I just happened across this book and am so thankful that I did. This book is full of helpful information that no oncologist or other medical provider has shared with my family. In addition to the general info, the recipes are simple and are divided up in useful categories to suit what may be going on at any particular point in time: what to eat on chemo day, what to eat when your white blood cell count is low, what to eat when you're constipated. The categories go on and on and in the words of my family member who has stomach cancer, she wishes "someone had told us about this book months ago. It's been a real life-saver."I don't advocate adopting any new nutrition plans without consulting with a physician. If you have a friend or family member who has cancer, however, I do advocate getting this book for them. Even if it just gives them ideas on what to eat at any given time (or gives them something positive to focus on to try on a day when they fell like crud) it will have been money very well spent.

This helped my father and those helping him while he was being treated. It was a God send and his Oncologist gave him his own copy just before Chemo was to be started. I bought my own and I have now bought this book for others who are either going through Cancer treatment or who are helping those who are. All have reported back that it is chock full of useful information.Even though I no longer need to prepare these recipes for my father I make them fore myself. Good food is good food. This book "just" ties that into a more complete treatment plan.

This is the best book out on eating well for cancer patients. I had cancer of the throat and had a lot of trouble eating until I found this book. I saw it in my cancer doctors office and orderred it from Amazon.I have seen several books on eating and bought several of them but this book is the best book I found

EASY TO FOLLOW is my 2nd title for this review.I purchased this book on the advice of my sister after going through horrific GI and bloating problems from chemo. I am getting TC for breast cancer (now all gone) and have had problems with all 3 rounds of chemo (one more to go). This book is now on the TOP of my cookbook and advice lists!!EASY TO FOLLOW: The layout, the sound advice, the recipes, and even the after treatment suggestions and obvious need. So, if you are having problems with your continually dying GI cells which results in pain, agony, tears and almost giving up...this is the book for YOU!

The recipes were easy to prepare and very tasty. While the recipes were geared for someone going through cancer, the entire family was able to enjoy many of the delicious recipes. It also was very helpful to have the recipes grouped by the types of side effects (e.g., neutropenia, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea). This grouping and the nutritional information provided made it easier to plan menus.

This book provides fairly good information but it does not reflect recent nutritional information related to fighting cancer. Too much sugar in many of the recipes. Recipes are easy to follow but I would use this as very basic info on addressing side effects of chemo, not eating well to complement the impact of chemo.

#571,753 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I ordered this book (subtitle: "The Booming Business of Global Warming") as soon as I saw the premise: an exploration of the businesses that will profit from climate change and the businesses whose profits are driving climate change.Restated from a positive perspective, these businesses profit from adaptation or a lack of mitigation, respectively.Restated from a normative perspective, they are businesses that serve or exploit society. So you can see that there's going to be a lot of hope and anguish in this book, except that it's often buried under discussions of revenue, jobs and market share. As an economist, I can appreciate the fact that money incentivizes a lot of behavior. As a human, I am horrified that so many clever people are making money on the corruption, fear and ignorance of politicians. (The book does not discuss a carbon tax or other mitigation policies that would erase the profits under discussion, and that's not the author's job. It's just a context that depresses me whenever I think of the magnificence of our "civilization" that humans seem determined to ruin.)Right.So... the book is divided into three sections: Melt, Drought, and Deluge. In Melt, Funk tells about Canada's rush to defend the Northwest passage that's opening with the shrinking arctic; how Shell oil went from "planning for less oil" to "drilling the arctic" as politicians left the path of Blueprints (limiting carbon emissions) for Scramble (dealing with too much carbon); the development of natural resources (and political shenanigans) as Greenland loses its glaciers; and how the Israelis got into selling (artificial) snow in the Alps. These chapters describe businesses that are making money as ice melts. In Drought, Funk joins private firefighters that protect insured houses while neighbors burn down; the traders who buy and sell water rights (covered often in this blog); the rush to buy farmland in poor countries to ship food to richer countries (see my article PDF); and the battle to halt desertification in Africa (and the refugees fleeing that desertification for Europe). These chapters are about the rich getting richer as they plan ahead and hedge their lifestyles, while the poor are increasingly marginalized. In Deluge, Funk explores the tensions along Bangladesh's borders, which are likely to be overrun as some of the 150 million residents flee their sinking, flooding delta; how the Dutch are willing to sell seawalls to anyone with cash (sorry Bangladeshis!); the quest to outwit nature by destroying mosquitoes before they can bring tropical diseases to middle latitudes; and the hopes of geoengineers (a group that deserves to be slandered with rain makers). Yes, there are some "solutions" in these chapters, but their cost (via adaptation) is so extravagant compared to mitigation that I think that we should be handing out penny-wise, pound-foolish awards to our so-called "leaders."In his final chapter, Funk reflects on his six years of seeing, thinking and talking about climate change. His words say it best: In psychology, magical thinking is the fallacy that thoughts correspond to actions— that to think is to do, to believe is to act. Perhaps the most magical assumption of the moment is that our growing belief in climate change will lead to a real effort to stop it. But as I discovered in Canada and Greenland and Sudan and Seattle and all over the globe, that is not automatically true. We are noticing that in this new world, there is new oil to find. There is new cropland to farm. There are new machines to be built. From what I have seen in six years of reporting this book, the climate is changing faster than we are. [snip] The hardest truth about climate change is that it is not equally bad for everyone. Some people -- the rich, the northern -- will find ways to thrive while others cannot, and many people will wall themselves off from the worst effects of warming while others remain on the wrong side. The problem with our profiting off this disaster is not that it is morally bankrupt to do so but that climate change, unlike some other disasters, is man- made. The people most responsible for historic greenhouse emissions are also the most likely to succeed in this new reality and the least likely to feel a mortal threat from continued warming. The imbalance between rich and north and poor and south -- inherited from history and geography, accelerated by warming -- is becoming even more entrenched [snip] Climate change is often framed as a scientific or economic or environmental issue, not often enough as an issue of human justice. This, too, needs to change. From this moment on, many of us could get rich. Many of us could get high. Life will go on. Before it does, we should all make sure we understand the reality of what we’re buying. The people who should read this book cannot afford it or cannot be distracted from their profits. What should those who read it do? The only action that comes to mind is revolution, but that's unlikely to succeed when citizens are distracted and deluded (e.g., Russia and the US), reactionaries are backed by crony capitalists (e.g., Egypt and Turkey), or people are too worried about big screen TVs to see the bigger picture (e.g., India and Australia). Indeed, it's hard to see how any leaders can win support from voters by promising less now for more later. Does this mean that China's dictators are our last hope?Bottom Line: I give this book FIVE STARS for exploring the stories of those who are profiting from our demise.

The book follows several interesting dilemmas and opportunities resulting from changes in the environment, which Funk generally attributes to man-made climate change. It doesn't matter if you're a believer/skeptic/denier, etc. to appreciate the problems Funk presents in this book. As he details in the book, changes result in winners and losers. You'll learn about both in this book. Funk explores the geopolitics of a melting arctic, examples of human adaptation to change, and a slew of geoengineering ideas intended to arrest the change altogether. If you're interested in climate science or energy policy, this is a great book to read. Funk occasionally gets into advocacy and moralizing, but when you're talking about the millions of destitute people in Bangladesh, you can't really blame him. This isn't a guide for how to get rich off of climate change, just several examples of people dealing with conditions on the ground, and prepping for things to get different - for better or for worse.

The climate change is an unmistakable reality. We are suffering from big earthquakes, storms, heavy rains, landslides, floods of never experienced before. There’re people who take global warming as their big chance. To insurance companies, increased risk is a problem only if it isn’t hedged or somehow priced in. Otherwise, it is a business opportunity. McKenzie Funk considers a free marketing principle sustains this trend. He gathered data of two dozen countries extending for six years, and separated the physical impact of global warming into three categories: melt, drought, and deluge. He thinks “technofix” is another pillar of the optimism. Needless to say, he’s not always affirmative to this way of thinking. Developing new oil fields, desalinization plants and artificial snowmakers call for huge energy. It may accelerates the climate change further. Only countries, affluent in money and technology, get benefit from the innovation. Climate change is often framed as a scientific or economic or environmental issue. McKenzie Funk wants this to be changed, as climate change is also an issue of human justice. “Windfall” gives a grave warning to the consumer society of today, who forget efforts to contain global warming.

Powerful consideration of the flip side to the death of our planet----flipside you say? Why Yes, who will make MONEY out of our demise! They are already starting by using the melted arctic as a shortcut and for drilling under what had been ice, planning to own the water supply, snapping up land for farming food when we are all starving, Private firefighters for your million dollar home, while your neighbor's burn for lack of money for a private saving policy, Insurance companies writing disaster policies, oil companies planning on grabbing that last lump of planet killing coal or barrel of air choking oil. There will be money to be made in owning desalination machines when the freshwater is all gone, and you, and me buddy, we will be paying for all of it while AIG, and SHELL and others get even richer. Sickening? Absolutely. This book is like a car wreck on the highway, no, worse, the car in front of you going off the bridge as the bridge collapses, you know you're next and you want not to look, but you have to, Mr Funk tries to stay sane and simply report, but you will find yourself disgusted beyond measure by what is coming, and we need people like him to tell us so we can prepare for what will be absolutely horrible.
