Great book

The construction of your average everyday children's book biography is a complex proposition. You have to examine your biographical subject and determine their kid-friendly appeal. If, for example, you are doing a biography of an obscure Pope of limited charm, you may wish to reconsider the task at hand. If, on the other hand, your subject is the infinitely amusing, not to say fascinating, Andy Warhol then you may have better luck. Next, this may shock you, but not all children are the same age. What age group are you writing for? It sounds backwards, but it's sometimes more difficult to write for younger rather than older children. Author Susan Goldman Rubin, however, has taken the challenge and has fashioned a book that someone under the age of 11 might find of interest. Finally, your pictures. With very few exceptions, young kids are not going to pay your book a whole lot of mind unless you find some cool and colorful photos/art with which to spot your book. In this sense, Ms. Rubin has not been entirely fulfilling. And so, "Andy Warhol: Pop Art Painter" is a great read and will certainly have young `uns grabbing for it, but it could have been a bit more forthcoming with the pretty pretty pictures of his work. Just my two cents.He was born Ondrej Warhola in 1928 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Slovakian parents. Never the most athletic of children (at age eight he came down with rheumatic fever), Andy loved comics, paper dolls, and coloring books. Once well, he started going to art classes and it was clear he had found his calling. Readers watch as Andy goes to school, moves to New York, and starts drawing shoes for Glamour magazine. Real pop art was soon to follow as Andy challenged what made something important and worthy of consideration. Can a comic be art if you blow up a frame? What about something as simple as a soup can? What is the worth of celebrity? By showing Andy's life and the choices he made, Rubin is able to show us a man, his unique style, and why that man and style were important to the world.Rubin takes certain steps to make the book kid-friendly right from the start. The almost picture book size of this ten by ten inch title makes it clear from the get-go that kids who pick this puppy up won't have to contest with any 500+ page tomes. The text then pops out at the viewer on top of colored squares that change their hue with the turn of every page. The author also knows that kids like to read about famous people AS kids, so we get a nice glimpse of Andy's younger years. Mind you, there are only 48 pages in this book and 15 of those are just a Time Line, Glossary, Source Notes, References and Resources, Illustration Credits, and an Author's Note. Now one of my favorite books about Andy Warhol was, "Uncle Andy's", by James Warhola. In that book, Andy Warhol's actual nephew recounted how he used to visit his favorite uncle once a year and discover through him what "art" was. Rubin doesn't mention this detail, but does show and tell about Andy's love of kids. As the book says at one point, " `Children were drawn to Andy like a comic character with his wig askew, glasses and ... jeans,' remembered Bob Colacello who worked for him for twelve years. `Andy loved to talk to kids. He found it interesting.'" And with this book, kids can find Andy interesting right back again.Here is what I loved. I loved that at the end of the book there was a small section entitled, "Some Museums Where You Will Find Work By Andy Warhol." Why doesn't every single biography of an artist DO this? It is infinitely more useful than some of the other stuff they cram into the back of children's books. Just the same, there is the occasional peculiarity. The Time Line is a bit of an extravagance here. More space filler than anything else, each date included is huge and the nine pages of Time Line after Time Line seem excessive. I would have loved to have seen a lot more of Andy's work in the book too. Just exchange 8 of those Time Line pages for a couple portions dedicated solely to displaying some cool Warhol work and I'm there. Otherwise, it rankles with the rest of the book.The other day I covered three tables in my library's Story Hour Room with books published in the year 2006. At 4 o'clock that day I led in my homeschooler bookgroup, a small collection of kids between the ages of nine and twelve. I told them that we'd be doing something a little different that week. Instead of everyone reading the same book, the kids would have a chance to grab whichsoever book most tickled their fancy. They'd take it, read it over break, and return it to me the next week. Some kids snatched up Susan Cooper's, "Victory". Others took great pleasure in reading Janet Taylor Lisle's, "Black Duck". And sure as shooting, one of my more reluctant readers found a great deal to love in "Andy Warhol: Pop Art Painter". It's a lovable book. There are things that I would have changed about it, but that doesn't make it any less of a wonder. If you're going to have one children's biography of Andy Warhol, let it be this one. Definitely a keeper.

Nathan Hale is the illustrator of the graphic novel Rapunzel’s Revenge, which was an Al Roker Book Club for Kids selection, an ALA Notable Book, and a YALSA Great Graphic Novel for Teens and earned three starred reviews. Nathan Hale's execution for being a spy in the Revolutionary War is postponed while he and the executioner wait for the official orders. While waiting, the gallows turns into a giant history book that swallows Hale and spits him back out with the knowledge of all history past and future. The executioner and British soldier are dubious, but they are soon won over as Hale regales them with the tale of how he ended up caught as a spy and how the war will turn out.This book focuses on the Revolutionary War from the perspective of the historic Nathan Hale (not the author of the same name), and thus, the battles he was mostly involved in. Along the way, readers also get to know Henry Knox, Ethan Allen, Ben Tallmadge, George Washington, Thomas Knowlton, Major Robert Rodgers, and a short postscript story about Crispus Attucks. Hale knows a way to make history come alive like few others. He manages to make things funny and entertaining, and thus very memorable. Readers will come away from this with a much better understanding of the Battles in Boston and New York City. I really appreciate the bibliographic material provided which explains where the author took some creative license because details are hard to find. I also appreciate it because I think I am going to have to hunt down some of the ones on Henry Knox. That guy is a hilarious character in this book, and I want to know more about him. Also, I have a fairly good grasp of history, but I did not remember the part about Washington getting his forces to construct a fort that would "magically" appear over night. Hale unwinds that tale quite entertainingly. If you want history in an easy-to-swallow dose, try out this series.Notes on content: Around five historic quotes with minor swear words. No sexual content. Since the history depicted is war time, there are several deaths mentioned. When dead are shown though, they are usually cartoon style, as in, men lying on the ground looking normal except with Xs for eyes. Hale keeps the gore to a minimum, but does depict characters in deep sorrow over deaths. Some black eyes and scratches are shown. A cow is blown to bits at one point (a historical fact), but is just drawn as a cartoon "Kaboom" with black dots around it.

I’ve been a fan of Nathan Hale’s for a while. Nathan Hale the author and illustrator, not the patriot, although you could be pardoned the confusion. I loved his illustrations for the graphic novels "Rapunzel’s Revenge" and "Calamity Jack," and his picture book "Yellowbelly and Plum" was one of my sons’ favorites. Hale’s current series has moved him to the top of my list.In 2012 Nathan Hale and Amulet Books started a series of graphic novels based on American History, under the banner (literally) "Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales." The first book in the series is "One Dead Spy," and it and the following books are interesting, easy to follow, and downright entertaining. I’m buying every one of them."One Dead Spy" is about Nathan Hale (the patriot), executed in 1776, at the very beginning of the American Revolution. The 128-page hardcover comic begins with Manhattan in flames, and a whistling Hangman bringing a noose to a gallows. He shoos a bald eagle away, and prepares Nathan Hale to be hanged. They’re soon joined by a British Officer, and these three will be the narrators for the rest of the book. Given an omniscient overview of American History, Hale sees what the destiny of the country is, and even though things look grim for the colonists (and more especially for Hale personally) in September 1776, he knows that there’s a brighter future. He proceeds to tell the Hangman and British Officer all about the American Revolution, focusing on the first year, and Hale’s role in it.Nathan Hale makes a good narrator for the years 1775-76, and his path crosses with the likes of George Washington, Henry Knox, Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, General Howe and other notable heroes and villains of American History. The author uses these interactions to tell the key events of the revolution, including the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, the Battle of Bunker Hill (and Breed Hill), the Boston Massacre, and the Declaration of Independence. He leaves a lot of things untold, telling more of his tales in future volumes, but gives us enough information to make this book a solid read.As a parent, a history teacher, a geek, and a promoter of graphic novels, I frigging love this series. I enjoy the humor and the menace in One Dead Spy—even as the Hangman provides comic relief, you can’t forget that the real narrator, Nathan Hale, was executed. Some of the humor is in asides, some is in telling the truths of history that are often left out of the dry history books. The illustrations are cartoony but excellent, with no confusion about who's who in the course of the story. Hale (the author) also doesn’t shy away from telling us when people suffered and died, making this more mature reading than you might expect. I loved it.

There is a masculine feel to these books. But, what's great is that they combine the extremely popular "graphic novel" writing style with real history. My son was semi-enthused upon opening these books on Christmas morning. He's 11, books aren't the most exciting gift! BUT, since then, I've caught him reading them when he's supposed to be asleep, by flashlight! He is not what I'd call a reluctant reader but he is choosing to read these over diary of a wimpy kid right now. My husband actually read one of them on Christmas morning, too! Great series, hope the author continues writing them!

My son has been a huge history and comic book buff since he learned to read last year. He is an avid reader - whatever he can get his hands on. I bought this for him thinking he might be a little young still but I was wrong. He has been reading this, Big Bad Ironclad and Hale's newer WWI book over and over and over again. He sleeps with them, they come in the car so he can read them on the way to school and on the way back home. Clearly, Nathan Hale is an entertaining writer. The only one we decided not to buy him yet is The Donner Party because of the subject matter (we'll wait until he's a little older to get this one). According to my son, Nathan Hale's books get 5 stars.

My 8yo son has read each of the NHHT books multiple times. He keeps one with him wherever he goes. They can have themes that may be shocking for some, but those opened good discussions for our family. Our kid asked questions, and we talked them out.If you have a kid who loves learning and humor and you can handle having discussions about hard stuff occasionally, then I highly recommend these books.We have loaned a couple to friends who are reluctant readers, and they also LOVED these books.
