Game Theory in general is a neat study. Though in the field of Economics, it could enhance many courses...Psychology, Sociology, Math, Business. This book kept me interested and the sections are broken down into very manageable chunks. The text used some examples that were hard for me to follow because I did not understand the concepts of the example to begin with. For example, I am not a sports fan so the sports discussions were hard to follow, especially the tennis and soccer examples. I got caught up just trying to figure out all the rules of the sports and it distracted me from understanding the theory of the "game." Without a good professor or prior knowledge, I would not have fully understood all the concepts in the book. However, you will be able to understand the major concepts on your own

I find game theory very interesting, so reading a book dealing with game theory for class was actually fun! This book is well-written and presents some very good thoughts! I highly recommend this book! This book met my expectations perfectly!

My teacher could hardly speak English so this book really saved my ass. Book explains things pretty well!

The book was in really good condition and helped me out a great deal for my Economics: Game theory class .

simple, clear game theory text; not a lot with respect to micro foundations; no mathematical proofs, but you don't necessarily need them to understand the concepts..

Excellent product! Excellent seller!

Book was very interesting & informative....Enjoyed it!

As a non-mathematical graduate student who still needs an appreciation of game-theory I found this book to be highly enlightening. The concepts and framework of the field is explained verbally, which is preferable for those that require an appreciation for, rather than a complete understanding of, game theory. A number of applications for game theory are also discussed that serve to demonstrate the broad applicability of the field.Overall, I would suggest that this book is a suitable alternative for anintroductory course in game theory. I therefore recommend it to those who need to use or appreciate game theory without needing to have a thorough grasp of the mathematics. Alternatively, it would also make a good introductory text for those just starting out. However, while this book may be preferable to those who are not game-theorists by trade or those who are just beginning their study, it may be too broad and unsuitable for those who require a deeper understanding.

Chop Suey, USA: The Story of Chinese Food in America (Arts and Traditions of the Table: Perspectives on Culinary History)

Review

Well organized and breathtakingly broad in its geographic scope, Chop Suey, USA is an utterly original and significant contribution to the field. Yong Chen has done a superb job. No one has attempted anything like this. (Hasia Diner, New York University)A thoroughly researched, highly readable account of the development of Chinese American food, this book fills important gaps in the literature of ethnic and food studies, while incorporating an appealing personal memoir into the narrative. (Jeffrey Pilcher, University of Toronto)Food is not just about sustenance and taste. It is also about culture, economics, race, and identity. This is made abundantly clear in this fascinating account of the history of Chinese food in America. Chop Suey, USA is a wonderful American story, and a tasty one at that! (Gordon H. Chang, Stanford University)A perceptive view of an America built on abundance and consumption... Well-researched... (Kirkus)Reading Yong Chen's new bookÂ… is an education. In some ways, it seems more like an encyclopedia or a peak into the brain of a man who has read and retained an almost overwhelming number of booksÂ… Readers can learn much from Chen's in depth analysis and framing. (8Asians)This well-researched book comes with seventy-eight pages of notes and a thirty-one page bibliography. It is seasoned with interested recipes, most of them chosen for their personal significanceÂ… An exciting intellectual endeavor. (H-Environment)Chop Suey is an engaging combination of research and food writing blended into a unified read. (CHOICE)Sophisticated... Groundbreaking... Yong Chen has published an ambitious and important work that has made a curcial contribution not only to the historical understanding of Chinese cuisine in the United States but also to the study of food in general. (Journal of Chinese Overseas)Chop Suey, USA was meticulously researched with a very extensive bibliography, the content is well organized with linking points and arguments, and the text is written with clarity and purpose. (Alfred Yee Journal of American History)A compelling and provocative contribution to the burgeoning field of American food studies. (Journal of American Ethnic History)

The author covers the rise of Chinese-American food from a socio-cultural perspective that interweaves American economic development and how Chinese immigrants found a niche catering to the demand for inexpensive restaurant food. Maybe only a person who likes sociology, history and Chinese food would find such a book fascinating. Then again, it is hard to resist a scholarly exploration of how chop suey (apparently representing what is now referred to as "stir fry") presaged Big Macs.

Good solid read, although who orders chop suey anymore

Very rigorous study, with citation of the documents and sources used. Well organized and with a clear thesis. This book has credibility.

Thus is a great book that really quantifies his food is at the center of globalization.

Good book.

Having read the entertaining social history of Chinese food in America, Chop Suey: A Cultural History of Chinese Food in the United States by Andrew Coe, I was expecting something similar in Chop Suey, USA. Although these books are almost identically titled, they are not at all similar. Yong Chen's is a personal and sometimes impassioned, look at the conditions of Chinese immigrants in 19th and 20th century America, the attitudes they faced from other Americans, and how Chinese food was enthusiastically accepted by all Americans. Professor Chen grew up in China and came to America in the 1990s as a graduate student, planning to return to China when he had earned his doctorate in American history. Instead, he made America his home and has been here ever since, first on the East Coast, and now on the West Coast. The first half of the book documents the tough time Chinese immigrants and even the first few generations had. Racism was the norm and it left the Chinese community with only a few career options -- laundry, being domestic cooks, and restaurants. When white and black America discovered that the food in the Chinese restaurants was plentiful and inexpensive, they took to it enthusiastically. Professor Chen explores the rapid spread of Chinese restaurants through the country and compares it to the rapid acceptance of American fast food in China in the past few decades.Later in the book, we learn more about the evolution of the Chinese restaurant and Chinese cuisine in America. Chop Suey, USA covers a lot of ground, about social trends, race relations, assimilation, cookbooks, and classes in America. If you are expecting a book about why America likes chow mein or who invented fortune cookies, look elsewhere -- this is a deeper, multi-layered look at the people behind the food.(Thanks to NetGalley for a digital review copy.)

Like many American, I *love* Chinese food, but I've never given much thought to the long and winding route it took on the road to popularity in the United States. "Chop Suey, USA" author Yong Chen has spent the last thirty years becoming an expert in the history of Chinese food in America and goes deeper into the subject than anything I've read before - about any food for that matter. To Chen, Chinese food in America reached such heights not because of its culinary merits, but because of socioeconomic factors. He recognizes that the spread of this particular cuisine enriched the American palate, but focuses more on the challenges Chinese immigrants faced as they worked to find their place in a foreign culture. The amount of research that must have gone into this analysis is astounding. Chen references everything from the earliest cookbooks to 19th century opinions on the staying power of Chinese food, all mixed with his own personal experiences. If you're strickly a foodie, don't expect this to be a love letter to Chinese food, as Chop Suey, USA does not exactly wax poetic about flavors and ingredients, but takes an anthropological, scholarly approach instead. In my opinion, this is a much more interesting approach and I hope to read more books like it!

Many non-Asian immigrant mothers, grandmothers, and children took in laundry and cleaned toilets, a fact that entirely escapes Yong Chen's victimization treatise. And, most heinously, he most dedicatedly and ignorantly ignores that in this country of, what he calls, an overabundance of food, there are long lines at the food pantries, and many who never make it that far. Too bad that, in all that research, Yong Chen is immune from socio-economic context. Usually, if I read something like this, I would learn, and not be completely put off by the author, and I would disparage anyone who would use words like "elitist," or "biased ethnocentric," to describe the author's point of view. But not this time.

This is a delightful little book, particularly so if you want to have your prejudices confirmed. Those prejudices would include the following: 1) Theory should never become detached from practice; 2) Elites who think they know what is best for the common folk are never to be trusted; 3) Europe is different from America and we should neither be intimidated by their culture nor excessively defensive concerning our own; 4) Ugliness--regardless of the political ideology supporting it--is still ugly; 5) Common sense and common aspiration trump hothouse academic posturing; 6) Architecture is space for human life, not an opportunity to make an abstract statement; 7) (my personal prejudice) Art deco (on the large scale) and prairie-style (domestically) so far exceed modernist or postmodernist architecture that one must wonder why they were ever abandoned.Tom Wolfe's purpose here is to demonstrate that establishment architecture (which happened to also be left-leaning, ideological, elitist architecture) is flat-out ugly. While he shows the linear progression of influences that led to the international style and sustained it, he never fully answers the question of why so many tolerated this nonsense for so long.I have had some personal dealings with one of the individuals in TW's rogues' gallery and I found him to be arrogant, pretentious, highhanded and not terribly imaginative. How do such individuals prosper? TW's answer, in part, is that they draw their actual living from university appointments rather than from real world construction projects, but he also argues that, in general, the consumer simply defers to such a person's judgment rather than following his own lights. Thus, one of the key lessons of the book is to trust yourself and your own inclinations and perceive the nudity of the elite culture's current emperors--a healthy antidote to many persisting cultural diseases.

I studied Architecture in the early 60's when the theories described here were in "full bloom". It has taken us a long time to get past stoicism in architecture. As always Tom Wolfe's is funny and entertaining when he delivers his observations on life. Thank you Tom!

This is a very disappointing book. It is largely a tirade against Modernism and architects and social-political movements. But it does not go anywhere in the end. You know what he does not like - and Tom did not like a lot of things - but not what he likes or what he thinks we should like.Yes there was a lot of bad Modernist architecture. But there has always been a lot of bad architecture of all types since the time that humans first built buildings. And despite the title, Wolfe never really addresses the topic of "our house". You can't blame the post WW2 flood of ugly houses on Bauhaus. I live in Miami. People come to see our "Art Deco" and "Miami Modern" architecture which is much inspired by Bauhaus. Today there is a building boom in housing in Miami that is strongly inspired by Bauhaus design - simple, uncluttered, harmonious but with aspects that attract the eye. What a blessed change from McMansions. This is not a book about architecture. It is a book about Tom Wolfe. One aspect that really annoyed me about this book was that Wolfe really is annoyed to an obsessive degree by people with large egos. And yet the ego that really stands out in this book is Tom Wolfe's. It is significant that Wolfe always wore a white suit to make sure that you don't miss him standing there in the crowd - the white flag of ego, on legs.

Read this after “The Right Stuff” because I really liked that book and was looking for an architectural history book. For someone familiar with the subject matter in this book I can understand the low reviews, but this was a very entertaining way to learn about the progression of architecture in the twentieth century.I look forward to reading more nuanced descriptions of this history, but I also really enjoyed reading a version from someone who wasn’t afraid to call modern architecture stupid and ugly.Beyond architecture the book is an illuminating account of how academia can create utter garbage when it turns completely inward, rather than using intellect to pursue societal goals.

Very funny and informative. I am a cabinet maker and regularly have to watch clients suffer through the nonsense he describes here from architects and designers. I found it fascinating to find out the historical origins.

The book looked new. It arrived more quickly than I expected from a private vendor, in a well protected envelope. A good price, even with the extra shipping charges. And in interesting book if you're interested in how America went from Beau-Arts buildings (quoin block corners, arched windows, ornamentation and peaked roofs with overhangs to shed rain) to the flat-roof, shear façade, 'modern' (dull) buildings of today. I've seen it everywhere...A beautiful Romanesque Church with an extension that looks like it could be a municipal parking garage or a nail factory. Ugh!

Amazing story. A story of professorial self annointed European transplanted Architects with a bunch of collegiate lemmings as followers. The emperors who wore no clothes is borne out here. Not the kind of architects I've had the pleasure of working with over the decades. Love em

Did you ever walk around the city (any city) and wonder where all those ugly new buildings came from? Why do they all look like identical filing cabinets? Mr Tom Wolfe presents a short, acidic history of how a few people managed to get a lot of us to believe that those concrete and aluminum slabs were works of art. If you've ever harbored suspicions that the emperor had no clothes here's ammunition to say so.

I wish I would have read this years ago. Mr. Wolfe analysis is brilliant.I am an architect and during my career I figured out on my own that much of the professional was powered by BS. Reading this book years ago would have saved me some time and frustrations.
