I love reading Jon Bloom's words and it surprises me it has taken so long to read this, his first book, even though it's been sitting on my bookshelf for a few years. Bloom takes stories from the Bible and writes a short imaginative vignette of the behind-the-scenes of what we don't get to read or "see" from the Bible. Whether it's Levi's surprise to being approached by Jesus to come "follow me", Peter walking on water, or Zacchaeus knocking on the door of someone whom he "repaid" what he'd taxed them, to mention three of the 35 stories, Bloom gives the reader a "fly on the wall" experience of the story.Each story is no more than three pages, all reflect a theme relevant to us today, and the learning is easy to discern but sufficiently powerful that the lesson lingers with you during your day.I recommend this book as it's easy and so enjoyable to read but stirs your heart to go deeper with Jesus.

I can't recommend this book highly enough, for two reasons in particular. 1)Sometimes the stories of the Bible can seem so distant and different from how our lives are now - or we've just heard them so many times - that we forget how relatable they actually are, and that men and women of the Bible are just like you and me, having lived through the same core struggles. This book takes various stories/characters from the Bible and presents them in a new light, with new considerations, and I am finding every single one applicable to my own life. 2)This book is all about "walking by faith". If you are going through any kind of difficulty and it is causing you to struggle in having faith, this book will encourage you, convict you, and give you strength. It has been a lifeline for me.I also appreciate that the chapters are short - and yet packed with so much content. Perfect for daily reading. And because the lessons it teaches are so fundamental and yet easy to lose sight of, I'm sure it is a book I will read more than once.

This book is AWESOME. Every chapter is only three pages long (or so). So I like to read one every night before I turn out the light. If you ever struggle with doubt or faithlessness, this book will help. The accounts chosen are very relevant to our lives today and the points are made well. You won't have to think long and hard about the lessons you are to learn. They are obvious and instantly applicable. Plus, the writing is humorous at times and entertaining. I consider my nightly reading to be a "treat." I look forward to my daily dose of faith booster!

My husband has dementia. Every night before turning out the light I read one of these stories to him and he always says, "That was a good one." We're going through the book for the third time because the stories are so uplifting and nutritious food for thought when going to sleep.

A fresh re-imagining of several narratives from the Bible. Some are merely an attempt to put the reader in the vicinity of the story. Others go a bit further, adding imaginative details on the thoughts and words of those we read about in the Scriptures. For example, how and why did Thomas get separated from the eleven, so that he was missing in John 20:24, and how did the reaction of the other disciples affect him when he next met them?I adore this kind of imagination: thinking about things that might have happened, might have been said (always staying true to what's recorded in the text). It helps put even more flesh and blood on people who were eyewitnesses of the glory.

I started this book at the beginning of a 4-hr flight and was finished by the time we landed. Every story spoke to me and encouraged me in different areas of my life that needed reminding to stay in faith. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone that needs a little help staying in faith and to those having difficulty trusting God. Like the characters in the stories, you will feel challenged to take a step in faith!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Jon Bloom, in a very respectful, realistic and absorbing fashion, brings to life some of the most dramatic stories of the Bible, focusing on the human side of the characters and how God shaped their faith and hearts through the circumstances they were put through - all the while casting the spotlight on you, the reader: how does this speak to you about God's work in your own life?Short and easy to read, either in a few sessions (or even just one, if you're an avid reader), or, equally well, slowly by using each story as a devotional guide, you will find plenty of wisdom and spiritual gain from this book. God bless Jon and the entire staff of Desiring God!

Possibly the best book with daily reads to remind me of God's unfailing faithfulness. Each day begins with an incident/event from the Bible and expounds with points for us. What an assurance every day!

A good way to do this is 1st watching on NETFLIX "Walking with Destiny" and a 7 part series "The War" as it places you 'in the period'.Then...begin reading this book.The 1st speeches begin 1897. As they move forward in time, I realized that some of these speeches would be relevant, if spoken today! Through the war years until just before his passing in January 1965. His speeches arouse every emotion of the human spirit! A truly great read!

given the recent turn of events in the world, I became very interested in Churchill. This book does a good job of presenting some of his most famous speeches and giving the reader a look at a tremendous speaker and exceptional human being. His complete speeches fill several books, so this is a lot more user friendly for those who want the more condensed version.Churchill was a tremendous figure. Who talks like this now? What politician has the moral courage to go against what is popular or easy to do what he believes to be right?I really wish we had leaders like this in our time. Churchill lead England through a brutal period of a year and a half when nobody was standing against Hitler in Europe. He never sugar coated things. He believed absolutely in what he had to do, and more importantly, he explained things clearly to people and made them understand that he needed them. Just check out his speechs during the Battle of Britain. He drives you with his words, spurring his listeners to action.Anyone who loves history should buy this book and add it too their library. It's powerful stuff.

the speeches are inspiring, and i often read them to friends, it stays out in my home. Go for his six volume history of WWII also, it won major literary prizes.

What can one say about this prolific writer and historical figure! I am so glad that someone has slogged through and excerpted the most uplifting and insightful of Winston Churchill's writings and speeches. I gave a copy of this to a LCDR in Iraq, who said it was the perfect book for him. When inspiration is necessary, this is a great book!

In a small book the history of over 50 years is relayed in a fascinating way by Churchill's life and rousing speeches. Easy to read and a great learning experience from high school(my grandson had a paper to write on Churchill) to old age(I was born just before the war in England)

One chapter is written to talk about Sarah, a young French girl, and her emotions, development, and grief during the time of the Vel d’Hiv round-up in July of 1942. The next chapter switches to the life of Julia, an American living in France as a journalist. The two stories become intertwined when Julia is asked to write about the Vel d’Hiv. She researches the dark event and comes across Sarah’s story, which fascinates her.Sarah’s Key is a heart- wrenching story that brings light and awareness to the tragic events of the holocaust. The way the author wrote from the perspective of Sarah made me feel as if I was there, witnessing the pain and horror that the women and children had to face. I loved push and pull of emotions as I read on into the book, but I wish it focused more on Sarah’s story, and not as much on the life of Julia.In conclusion, Sarah’s Key is an emotional book that will make you want to just keep reading. This book is a blend of fiction and histoy, and is a great way to learn more about the events that occurred in Paris in 1942. It is memorable and will keep you thinking even after you finish the book. I would definitely recommend this book, it was a great read!

Sarah's Key describes the roundup of the Jews of Paris in 1942 at the orders of the occupying Nazis. Many French citizens did what they could to help the victims, while others cooperated in the roundup. Whole families were taken away by regular French police and transported by ordinary city buses. The past and the present begin as two stories and merge into one.This book is one part riveting history, one part page-turner, and one part tear-jerker. I gave it four stars instead of five because the last part of the book turns the focus onto the personal problems of the journalist and becomes a sort of rambling soap opera, which some may enjoy and others may not.However, I would recommend this book for its portrayal of history, its swift pace, and its many twists and turns.

Another favorite novel, which I gifted. The interwoven story of Sarah, a young Jewish girl, and Julia Jarmond, an American journalist living in Paris. Set in Paris in 1942 and 2002, the story is told of Jewish family sent by the French ultimately to Auschwitz. As they are rounded up, Sarah locks her brother, Michel, in a hidden cupboard with a promise to return for him. Her story is told along with Julia's story of researching the sixtieth anniversary of the tragic events. As Julia's research continues, she becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to Sarah despite the effect it is having on her own family. A stirring, emotional read...mesmerizing, and highly recommended.

It is a sad, moving story . The part that is set in 1942 is moving and depressing . The part set in 2002 is really mostly unnecessary . It is yet another book that switches back-and-forth between two time periods in order to have the later time period tell the story of the former . In the miracle story in that later time period is simply annoying . So if it had been much more about 1942 and much less about 2002 the rating would have been much higher.

I've read several compelling novels set during the WWII Holocaust, but this one moved me more than most. It is a story about a little-known event in which the French police gathered up Jewish families on one terrifying night to turn them over to the Gestapo. It was written from an unusual point of view- that of a modern-day journalist researching the event as a landmark anniversary approaches. While doing the research, she happens to learn of an incredibly sad story involving a young Jewish girl and her family who were rounded up during this incident. She uncovers an amazing connection between that family and her ex-husband's family, and that connection is what makes the story so compelling.Any novels about this period in history are going to have some similarities, and I felt this one was more tragic than most, but also more uplifting in the end.

I joined in the conversation we started talking about various books in the historical fiction genre that were great reads. I offered the names of a couple of my favorites and Sarah's Key was one of the two that these ladies offered.This book was simply riveting! Hard to put down. It was everything I was told it would be and more. I've since recommended it to others as well.

This novel tells the heart wrenching tale of a ten year old girl, Sara, thrust into the horrors of the Holocaust as discovered by an American journalist, Julia, living in Paris. The novel moves between the years 1942 and 2002. Julia, the American journalist, her Architect husband and daughter have inherited the apartment from which Sara and her family were forcefully taken during the Vel' d'Hiv', the round-up of French Jewish citizens by their own countryman. Julia becomes haunted by Sara's story and her determination to find her becomes intertwined with her own personal issues and challenges. The novel moves along quickly (I hated putting it down when life intervened) to a satisfying and heartfelt conclusion.

Today's predatory lending is yesterday's loan sharkingLooking for an investment return that could exceed 500 percent annually-maybe even twice that much?Private, unregulated lending to high-risk borrowers is the answer, or at least it was in the United States for much of the period from the Civil War to the onset of the early decades of the twentieth century. Newspapers called the practice “loan sharking” because lenders employed the same ruthlessness as the ocean’s greatest predators. State and federal governments slowly adopted laws and regulations curtailing the practice, butorganized crime continued to operate much of the business. In the end, lending to high-margin investors contributed directly to the Wall Streetcrash of 1929.Loan Sharks tells us the history of predatory lending in the United States, tracing the origins of modern consumer lending to such older practices as salary buying and hidden interest charges. Yet, as Geisst shows, no-holds-barred loan sharking is not a thing of the past. Many current lending practices employed by credit card companies, payday lenders, and providers of consumer loans would have been easily recognizable at the end of the nineteenth century. Geisst demonstrates how the custom of charging high interest rates, especially to risky borrowers, despite attempts to control the practice by individual states, is still prevalent. My son loves Garfield and he went from a student in "reading recovery" at school (that means below grade level) to a student who reads 2-3 grades above his grade level because of his desire to read MORE Garfield than I was willing to read to him at night. Luckily, unlike many book series, this series goes on forever! And Jim Davis, bless his heart, has made it so affordable to collect his books in these fat cat 3-packs (3 books in one cover) and Amazon has made it even MORE affordable. Unlike some books made for kids (like Cap'n Underpants, for example) there are no misspelled words as the author tries to mimic what a kid's comic would look like, there is little if any violence like in some comic books, no scantily clad comic character women, no racey themes are statements.... It's just perfect for a kid in elementary school learning to read... and now and then, I'll read a few pages... and grandma loves to steal one, too... so it's just nice for all ages. So glad we stumbled on to these! It's a long-lived interest that has helped him so much!

I thought these books were great! They were hilarious and I understood all of the jokes. I highly reccomend these books for grades 3-8. These books are really popular at my middle school. I love how they combined three of the books into one. I also love how Garfield insultes Jon’s intellect. By the way this was only thing I got from my parents for Christmas!!! I will ask my mom to buy me more for my birthday as the birthday gift. Jim Davis is my favorite author.(This is probably the only thing that I will probably get for my birthday*sigh*)

Oh My Dear Fat Sarcastic, Non-Empathic Garfield, How You do Make My Son and Me Guffaw with Laughter!I have been purchasing these wonderful FAT CAT 3-PACKS for quite some time. My son is twelve and has been reading GarfieldFat Cat since he was a Tot, and continues reading as a "Tween." For those who don't know, the book comes as one thick book, thus the "3-pack" although to be perfectly honest, that could seem to be a bit misleading. My first purchase many years ago had me thinking I was getting three books. I was very happy when I saw just how thick (a good inch or more) the big soft bound comic strip book was; so, no complaints here.He had asked for Volume 1, but I couldn't understand why it was so expensive at some places and yet hard to find at others. Well, I found GARFIELD FAT CAT 3-PACK VOL 1 here, and decided to buy it used. It arrived in about two weeks in almost perfect/new condition.

I had no idea this existed until I heard it mentioned on Family Guy fairly recently. It is a taste creative genius that I did not expect from this old family classic comic writer. I love when you find these diamonds in a sea of norms. This was an artist that wanted to try something else because he can. He earned it. Thank you, Jim and everyone else that contributed.

Ordered to replace the one the kids wore out at my parents' place-- that we had from when I was a kid!Got the package, opened it up, and I thought my five year old son was going to explode. (With joy.) Once he calmed down enough to be understandable, he was very happy that the "Great Garfield book from grandma and granpa's!" is now at our house.Down side: he is even more of a Garfield fanboy than before.

I bought this book as a gift for my 8-year-old grandson who adores Garfield. He loved it! I was a bit anxious at first since they are labeled "graphic," but they are completely fine. They read just like one of his cartoons. They just happen to be in a book form.

I have been buying the separate Garfield books as they are released in Kindle format on Amazon, but for some reason seven random volumes (2,3,4,19,26,37,38) are restricted to the USA only. I have tried contacting Amazon and the publishers several times but no one can provide an answer why. The complete set of separate Garfield books can currently only be bought in the USA, and I have wasted my money.If you plan to buy a collection of Garfield books, buy the more recent 'Garfield Complete Works' instead.

I purchased for my 11 year old son who is obsessed with Garfield. This book is filled with classic Garfield comics, just like in the "Funny" Section of the Sunday paper, only now all in one place. We own several volumes of the Garfield Fat Pack books, and he said so far this is his favorite. I love that I can find on Amazon where I cannot find in stores locally. Well priced and fast shipping was an added bonus as this mom forgot as a Christmas gift. It arrived in plenty of time.
