Very thorough in pre-planning your financial situation.. best of bought at or before your students junior year.

Excellent guide.

"Paying For College: Everything You Need to Maximize Financial Aid and Afford College (2019 Edition)" (2018 publication; 352 pages) is the latest edition of the book that previously was published as "Paying For College Without Going Broke". In the book's opening, the authors observe that "You might think that the families who receive the most financial aid would be the families with the most need. In fact, this is not necessarily true. ... Financial aid strategy is for everyone. Whether you are just getting by or reasonably well off, you still want to maximize your aid eligibility." In the "Long Term Strategy" chapter, the authors remind us of the formidable financial mountain that will needed to be climbed by anyone wishing to send their kids to college. If your school's tuition, room and board is $48,593, it will be $68,547 in a mere 10 years), and the cost rises an average of 3.5% a year (compounded yearly, of course). The book does a great job laying out the various investment and savings options, including the all-important 519 plans (available in all-but-one state--shame on you Wyoming!). In the "Short Term Strategies" chapter, the authors review what you can do (legally, of course) to, in essence, lower your assets and overall value. Keep in mind that 'Financial Aid Officers (unlike the IRS) area concerned about only four years of your financial life." The book then examines, in detail, a number of thing you ca do to shift income out of those four years, and thus increasing your financial aid eligibility. This is where the book is perhaps at its most valuable. Did you know that certain schools include the equity of your house in your overall value, but others do not? But perhaps THE most essential chapter of the book is the 65 page "Filling Out the Standard Dorms", where the authors examine line by line how to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the 2019-2020 form of which is included in the book's Annex) and PROFILE forms, It is surprising how easily one can get lost in what needs to go where, and simply how to fill out the forms correctly from start to finish (if you make a mistake or accidentally skip a line, the FAFSA form will not be processed, it's that simple (yet devastating). In the later parts of the book, the authors provide useful tips on how to 'negotiate' (but don't ever use that word with the FAO!) to try and get a better overall financial package. "Paying For College" is published by the Princeton Review, which publishes a slew of other college-related books, including what I think is the best college-shopping guide out there, "The Best 384 Colleges" (2019 Edition). Whether your financial needs are high, low or even non-existent, I'd readily suggest you spend some time with this book.

All information in this book can be found for free by simply reading a few articles on the internet. Summary: 1) college is expensive; 2) unless you are below poverty level, you won't get any financial help (beyond loans that need paid back at interest rates); 3) student should get good grades and entrance exam scores; it increases the chance the school might (repeat, might) offer a discount on the retail price of tuition; 4) college is expensive, good luck. I just saved you $25. You're welcome.
