I had questions on Gnosticism for years. This book does simplify the complicated and can allow you to advance if you wish.
I have been reading about gnosticism for a while and have read many books. This book explained the concepts simply and clearly...Several of the concepts I had been struggling with suddenly made sense...A simple read for such profound material...
All those nagging questions and inconsistencies that held you back are layedopen before your eyes..This book will spur you on like no other..Absolutely a must read..
Extremely interesting view of what the Bible left out. Not for the strict Chriistiian who only believes in the Bible only.
In my opinion this book presents a rather facile and sometimes misleading picture of ancient gnosticism. If the author had provided some actual texts from Nag Hamadi it might have given the reader a clearer picture of the ancient gnostic thought world -- or at least a clearer picture of how unclear we are with respect to historical gnosticism. The author finds gnostic influence in a number of places in modern culture, but to make her point she seems to cast her net too broadly to capture examples, often without making clear exactly how her examples exemplify her point, or even what her point might be.Consider:"In many ways [the Matrix Trilogy] was an allegory for some Gnosticism belief systems. The movies seem to say that humanity necessarily had to break free of the day-to-day world we live in to embrace the real world, to make new choices. The second film's references to the Dead Sea Scrolls and Origen of Alexandria, the early Christian orthodox father, may be missed by those unfamiliar with the scrolls or the historical figure."It would have been helpful it the author had explained how the mention of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Origen substantiated her claim that the Matrix trilogy was an allegory for some Gnostic belief systems. I am familiar with the DSS and the works and historical place of Origen, and I am not clear about what she is meaning to say. From a literary standpoint the author's style seems to me to be disjointed, staccato, and subsequently difficult for me to follow. If this happens to be the reader's style of thinking as well, then the book may provide an interesting source of inspiration. Those looking for a coherent critical discussion of ancient gnosticism would probably do well to look elsewhere.
I just read the Kindle sample online and haven't bought the book. What I read looked like it needed an editor. Some of the sentences didn't make sense until I read it a few times and mentally added corrections to grammar, punctuation and spacing (some words had spaces in the middle of them: ex. at tach) Is it better in the print copy and does this get resolved after downloading the Kindle version? As it is now, I wouldn't buy it.
Extremely well researched and organized compilation of a part of Christian culture most of us don't even know it exists. A must read for every Judeochristian interested in the origin of their religion.
