The best manual you can get before spending lots of money on Official Toyota Service manuals. Quality has decreased a lot over the years, as they now use a very flimsy style of recycled paper (Honestly it feels as cheap as newspaper). If water ever touches it, not to mention grease or other substances that you may encounter when working on a vehicle, it almost self-destructs. Even with the abundance of information on the internet, there are so many different, and conflicting information sources, sometimes it is better to go with hardcopy. The price point makes it worth it, the quality makes it lose 2 stars from 5.
Good manual but leaves a lot to be desired. I have the FSM for the 2001 Tacoma, and way, way better than this but it was also $500 for volumes 1 & 2. So that's why I'm going four instead of 3 stars. It is decent, however, they are too general with the different models and trims. It will show a pic of a 4Runner then later in the sequence a taco, then a t100. The General maintainence is very good and the basics too. In depth, it leaves a lot more vague information that can have you guessing. It gives great info on how to change a timing belt, but crummy info on, say how to remove a grill or replace light bulbs and head lamps.Bottom line: if you don't have or can't borrow or buy a $500+ FSM, yeah it is at best and worst, a decent buy. It has its credits and deficiencies but definitely better than nothing.
Like others have said this is a real disappointment. To general, entire procedures are missing, pictures are not particularly well labeled, etc. I ended up getting a factory service manual online and while its a big book it satisfies my needs much better. Do not buy this book.
I've always gone with Haynes manuals in the past. I preferred the way they were written and illustrated to Chilton. That said, I was very disappointed in this manual when I began looking into the various jobs I was considering performing on my Tacoma. My first impression, in agreement with other reviews, was that this manual tries to cover too many different models. Because of this, some of the procedures become muddled and hard to follow for a specific vehicle. However, my biggest complaint is that the author/publisher makes decisions for us about what may or may not be cost effective/beyond our skill level and provides no information on operations deemed thus. This is absolutely unacceptable and it kinda makes me angry. Specifically, I wanted procedures for removing the differentials from my axle housings, particularly the front, as the back seems pretty straight forward. It's one of the reasons i bought the manual. Instead, I got nothing. I'm wondering if tearing down and rebuilding an entire engine isn't too difficult for the DIYer, what's so frikkin' tough about changing ring and pinions, or carrier bearings, or inspecting your ring and pinions for chips or cracks.Come on, Haynes, give us the procedures and let us decide if the tooling is too expensive or the skills are beyond us. Don't make that decision for us. Based on a COMPLETE tear down and rebuild? I think not.
I bought this (of course) to allow me to do maintenance on my Toyota 4Runner. Although this product will certainly allow me to do that, I was disappointed in the print quality - more specifically, the thin, "news-paper like" weight of the paper. The paper is so thin that you can see the print on the opposite page bleeding through and this makes it difficult to read. I wish I'd have known that before purchase and I would have spent more for a higher quality product. If you wan't something useful that will last and that you can keep with the vehicle and provide to a new owner when you sell, then this is not the manual you want and I'd suggest you shop around more.
This book is similar to all of the other Haynes repair manuals. It's concise, useful, and inexpensive.It does not contain all of the detailed information that would be in a Toyota factory manual.But for $20 you will get all of the information you need for most DIY repairs.I always buy a Haynes manual for every "new" vehicle I acquire.
Great book, with lots of information. Pretty easy to follow with step by step instructions and pictures. Highly recommend if you're looking to do some routine maintenance, and if you've got the tools maybe even some more technical procedures.
I concur with many other poor reviews that this manual is not very detailed, and many obvious things are missing. In addition to that, I have encountered some repair guides that are simply wrong. For example, the instructions for replacing the spark plugs on my 2000 Tacoma recommend replacing the cap and rotor. Problem is, this model pickup does not have a distributor cap. This problem along makes me mistrust much of the rest of the information.
